Right Elbow In Golf Swing

I have come to a conclusion through trial and error and never-ending research, that the right elbow in the golf swing is so critical, and Ben Hogan knew it too!

I have struggled for many years with a disconnected golf swing. My arms run off from my body, AFTER my shoulders have stopped turning going back, and my right elbow gets too far away from my body. This creates a very disjointed swing, that requires a “re-routing” coming down, as well as more timing, which I don’t have either.

Having realized I want a flatter, more compact swing much like Ben Hogan, I have been working hard to attain it. Well…the other day “on the course” I had my “ah ha” moment. I focused on keeping my right elbow in close to my side at the top of my swing, and hit the purest drive of the day.

Hoping it wasn’t a fluke, I did it on my next iron shot. Again…a compressed, beautiful shot. Then the next tee shot…again…did it.

I am now a believer in working on the right elbow in the golf swing.

Take a look at Ben Hogan’s right elbow in the picture below.

Square Your Clubface With Your Pivot

We all know a square (to the path) clubface will create straight golf shots, and yet why do so many golfers ignore this and not focus on finding the easiest most consistent way to square the golf clubface at impact?

There are really only 2 ways to square your clubface. You can use your hands, which creates a timing issue, resulting in inconsistent shots and scores. When your timing is on, you may shoot a low score, but when it’s off, your score will balloon like crazy.

Or…the BEST way to square your clubface in your golf swing is using the pivot of your body, with your arms (and hands) staying CONNECTED. This is a very powerful and consistent way to square your club at impact nearly every time. When you get this concept down, you will be shocked at how consistent your swing will get, and how powerful your shots are.

Hogan’s Upper Body Pivot

As you can see with this website, I will be referring to Ben Hogan repeatedly as he is considered one of the best ball strikers of all time. And, I like that it is not too mechanical to learn and apply to your own game. The emphasis of this entire site is a “pivot-driven” golf swing for power and consistency, and Ben Hogan in my humble opinion was a pivot-driven golfer.

The upper body when used in correct sequence in the golf swing is a very power pivot source. Unfortunately, most amateur golfers don’t use it correctly, and therefor make very weak, “armsy” golf swings with no power and a total lack of consistency.

When you pivot your upper body with your arms “connected” you now have a very powerful, and consistent move into the golf ball. Hogan liked to think his upper arms were very close to his ribs, and that at no point in his golf swing did they ever get too far away.

A great drill Hogan had in his book, was throwing a basketball, but from the side, very similar to your golf swing.

Hogan Two Hand Pass Drill

Can you the similarities to your golf swing?

See how he is moving his entire upper body with his arms connected in a move similar to your golf swing? Also, pay attention to his “target”. He is not just throwing a ball anywhere, but he is making sure to release the ball to a specific target, just like you should in golf.

Try this drill and I’ll bet you see more consistency and power in your golf swing.

Hogan’s Power Source

Ben Hogan was one of the best ball strikers of all time. We all know he, like all golfers had his demons and mishits (hooks), but we can learn a lot from his perception of the golf swing. Hogan truly believed the body moves together both back and through. What I really like about his downswing is his description of what starts back down to get the most power and consistency out of your golf swing.

Hogan Downswing

You see in the illustration how Hogan really emphasized a lower body hip rotation (pivot) to start his downswing. He in no way uses his upper body at this point. It’s all a lower body pivot towards the target with his hips rotating to the left and his arms just dropping in the slot, with no concsious effort to do so.

I am currently working on this move, as it is a powerful move to incorporate in your golf swing. This lower body pivot creates a lot of lag in your wrists, as well as torque in your core from the separation of lower body and upper body.

Here is Ben Hogan himself discussing the importance of the lower body pivot.
